How does DEFINITY compare to CRT recorders? Print E-mail

Cathode ray tubes (CRT) have been used for film recording for more than half a century – well making it the most mature technology used in contemporary digital film recorders. In their underlying fundamentals CRT recorders are remarkably similar to DEFINITY, in that both systems make use of a monochrome imager, color filters and a optical lenses to photographic process.

After decades of development, it is now possible to achieve good results with the more expensive CRT systems and, as cycle times are concerned, in the last years the most powerful systems have been driven to attain recording speeds somewhat under one second.

However, CRTs continue to be troubled by a number of problems which no degree of development has been able to solve conclusively, for example phosphor flare, limited life and shifts in geometry, all of which become increasingly problematic the harder the tube is driven in order to improve recording speeds.

At the same time, the very fundamentals of its design ensure that DEFINITY is left entirely unaffected by the great majority of these issues:

The geometry of its LCD imager is, of course, absolutely fixed and will not ever undergo distortions, nor will it ever experience the rectangular burn-in that can result from changing image formats in CRT systems.

With DEFINITY you will have an almost unlimited contrast range at your disposal, without any of the phosphor flare frequently associated with overdriven tubes.

The exceptionally long life of DEFINITY's light source also gives it a high stability in terms of chromaticity and luminosity previously thought unachievable with CRTs.

The considerably shorter life of high-powered CRT recorders that they have to be serviced on a regular basis and burned-out tubes replaced, which requires the film recorder to be returned to the manufacturer: Users of CRT recorders frequently purchase a back-up device for the resulting down-times.
