2K may have been accepted as the industry standard for the film output even of major releases produced in Digital Intermediate – Yet there is one application where it makes sense to preserve the 4K of the original scan until the moment it is recorded back on film. This is Cinemascope, where an image recorded at 2K means that 50 per cent of the horizontal image information has been lost. In projection this results in stretched pixels perceived as having a horizontal resolution of only 1K. And this where DEFINITY's anamorphic pixels come into play – they can boost the horizontal resolution to up to 6K: A 4K widescreen image undergoes an anamorphic squeeze on-the-fly, preserving 100 per cent of the original image information in the process. Instead of discarding half the horizontal image information, they are preserved on-film. In projection, the pixels are not stretched into rectangular blocks, as is the case with conventional film recorders, but end up much closer to the way they were perceived during post production, enabling a Digital Intermediate workflow that ensure a match in pixel geometry as much as in color or contrast.  |
